The Kusaug Youth have formally presented a list of pressing concerns to the Inspector General of Police during a meeting held on April 11, 2025. The group raised critical issues surrounding peace, justice, and the overall security situation in Bawku, urging swift and impartial action from the Ghana Police Service to restore calm in the troubled enclave.
The first major issue highlighted was the call for justice and enforcement
of the law. The youth condemned what they described as the continued unlawful
presence of Seidu Abagre, who they claim has assumed a chieftaincy position in
Bawku without legitimacy. They asserted that this has heightened tensions and
called for his immediate arrest and prosecution. According to them, this action
would restore respect for the rule of law and uphold the authority of the
rightful traditional leadership in the area.
The youth also demanded the establishment of a commission of enquiry into
the alleged police shooting that resulted in the death of one Fuseini Iddrisu
and left nine others injured. They described the incident as deeply troubling,
questioning why armed officers would use live ammunition on unarmed civilians.
They insisted that accountability was necessary to build public trust in the
police force.
Concerns were also raised about the leadership of the police in the region.
The youth claimed there is a disconnect between the Regional and Divisional
Commanders and the communities they are supposed to serve. This, they said, has
led to poor intelligence gathering and a lack of cooperation between residents
and the police. They called for new leadership capable of engaging effectively
with the community and rebuilding broken trust.
The Kusaug Youth further expressed their disappointment over what they
viewed as repeated disregard for the traditional authority of the Zugraan. They
urged the police to acknowledge and support the legitimate leadership and help
enforce customary directives aimed at maintaining peace. The group referenced
cultural practices that require traditional rites to be performed before shared
spaces like markets can be safely accessed after bloodshed.
Additionally, the misuse of police escorts and security vehicles was a major
concern. The youth alleged that armored vehicles and police jeeps were being
used for unofficial purposes, including the transportation of goods and, in
some cases, the suspected movement of arms. They demanded an immediate review
of escort protocols and better oversight to prevent such misuse.
The petition was signed by key representatives of the Kusaug Youth, who expressed readiness to work with the authorities to promote peace and development in the region.
