Member of Parliament for Tempane, Hon. Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has strongly
condemned what she described as the unprofessional conduct of the Ghana Police
Service during a recent incident in Bawku. In a press release dated April 10,
2025, the MP expressed deep concern over an altercation that occurred on April
9 between police officers and civilians, which led to the tragic loss of one
life and left several others injured.
She extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wished a
speedy recovery to those who sustained injuries. Hon. Akanvariba emphasized
that such acts of violence undermine the core mandate of the police and must
not go unpunished. She urged immediate investigations into the incident and
called for accountability, insisting that those responsible should face the
full rigour of the law.
While acknowledging the frustration and sorrow felt by residents of Bawku
and the wider Kusaug area, the MP appealed to the community to remain calm and
law-abiding as efforts are made to address the situation through legal and
constructive means. According to her, incidents like these damage the already
fragile relationship between the security services and the people they are
meant to protect, especially in a region still recovering from conflict.
Hon. Akanvariba assured the people of Kusaug of her unwavering commitment to
peace, justice, and development in the area. She noted that President John
Dramani Mahama and all six Members of Parliament from Kusaug are united in
their resolve to work towards lasting peace and the restoration of economic
progress in Bawku.
She further called on Ghanaians across the country to support the people of
Bawku through prayers and solidarity. According to the MP, achieving peace in
Bawku requires the involvement of all stakeholders and a genuine commitment
from both government and civil society to address the root causes of the
unrest.
As the Minister of State in charge of Public Sector Reforms, Hon. Akanvariba
reaffirmed her readiness to collaborate with relevant institutions to ensure
that such incidents are not repeated. She concluded her message with a call for
national attention and support for peacebuilding efforts in Bawku.
