Thrown Away: The Heart-Wrenching Story Of Abuja's Abandoned Babies

A heart-wrenching incident has shaken the Jikoko village in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. A day-old baby was found abandoned in a carton, wrapped in cloth, and dumped along a bush path near a poultry farm. The discovery was made by residents who immediately notified the police, and the baby was taken to a health center for medical attention.

This incident has sparked concern and outrage in the community, with many questioning the circumstances that led to the abandonment of the newborn. According to eyewitnesses, the baby was found in a carton, which suggests a desperate attempt to dispose of the child.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation has commenced to locate the mother of the abandoned child. The baby is currently in the care of the social welfare department. SP Adeh assured the public that the police would do everything possible to track down the mother and determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a baby has been abandoned in the Mpape area. In January 2025, another newborn was found along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape. The mother was later arrested and told police she abandoned the baby due to poverty. This incident highlights the growing concern over the rising number of abandoned babies across Abuja.

In December 2024, the police command expressed worry over the increasing number of abandoned babies in the FCT. This trend suggests a deeper societal issue that needs to be addressed. The authorities must work together to identify the root causes of these abandonments and implement measures to prevent them.

While the exact reasons behind the abandonment of the day-old baby in Jikoko are still unknown, possible factors that may contribute to such incidents include poverty, lack of access to reproductive healthcare, social stigma, and mental health issues.

The abandonment of newborn babies is a serious issue that requires a comprehensive approach to prevent future incidents. The authorities must work together with social welfare organizations to provide support to vulnerable mothers and ensure that they have access to the resources they need to care for their children.

As the investigation into the abandonment of the day-old baby in Jikoko continues, many questions remain unanswered. What drove the mother to abandon her child? Will the authorities be able to track her down and provide the necessary support? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the fate of the abandoned baby and the circumstances surrounding its abandonment will continue to haunt the community for a long time.

The authorities must take concrete steps to address the root causes of baby abandonment and provide support to vulnerable mothers. By working together, we can prevent future incidents and ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up in a safe and loving environment.
