The youth of Garu, under the banner of the Integrated Youth for Development,
have officially petitioned the Northern Electricity Distribution Company
(NEDCo) over the frequent and unannounced power outages affecting residents of
Garu and Tempane. In a letter submitted to the Garu NEDCo office on April 10,
2025, the youth expressed serious concern over the impact of the power cuts on
daily life, businesses, health facilities, and public safety.
The petition, signed by youth leader Mohammed Awam, highlighted months of
erratic electricity supply without any clear explanation from the power
distributor. According to the statement, residents are facing growing
frustration due to NEDCo’s continued silence and its failure to provide timely
updates. The youth group also noted that repeated attempts to reach the local
office via phone have been unsuccessful, further deepening mistrust and public
anger.
They cited the increasing number of fire outbreaks across the country, often
linked to electrical faults, and warned that similar incidents could happen in
Garu and Tempane if the situation is not urgently addressed. With ongoing
security concerns in the Kusaug area, the petition emphasized the importance of
consistent electricity supply for maintaining communication and ensuring
community safety, especially during emergencies.
The youth referenced Article 21(1)(f) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which grants every citizen the right to information. They demanded that NEDCo publicly disclose the reasons for the outages, what steps are being taken to resolve the issue, an estimated timeline for restoration, and measures to prevent future disruptions. They also urged the company to use all available media platforms, including radio, community information vans, and social media, to ensure widespread dissemination of this information.
The petition was copied to key stakeholders including the Public Utilities
Regulatory Commission (PURC), the Member of Parliament for Garu, the Garu
District Assembly, the Upper East Regional Minister, and the Minister of
Energy, among others. The youth maintained that failure to act on the matter would
only worsen public dissatisfaction.
Residents of Garu and Tempane are now looking forward to a timely and clear
response from NEDCo, as hopes remain high for improved service delivery and
better communication from the utility provider.
