President John Dramani Mahama has firmly addressed the recent wave of
allegations surrounding suspicious flights into Ghana, urging the public and
political actors to shift focus toward supporting national security operations.
Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, the President
emphasized the urgency of prioritizing national peace over what he described as
distractions.
According to President Mahama, the country cannot afford to waste critical
time and resources on unproven claims, stating, “We do not have the resources
or time to engage in games of smoke and mirrors.” He made the comments during a
graduation ceremony for officer cadets, using the platform to stress the
importance of credible intelligence and public collaboration with the nation’s
security forces.
His remarks follow heated debates triggered by claims made by the Assin
South MP, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, who alleged that aircraft recently landing in
Ghana, including one operated by AirMed, were involved in illegal activities
such as drug trafficking and money laundering. The government has rejected
these accusations and challenged the MP to provide evidence.
The situation escalated on April 9 when top figures from the opposition New
Patriotic Party gathered at Rev. Fordjour’s residence in Accra to resist an
attempted arrest by the National Investigations Bureau. President Mahama, however,
maintained that attention should not be diverted from supporting the security
services who are already stretched thin across various operations.
He used the occasion to reaffirm the government’s dedication to national
peace and reiterated the need for all citizens to contribute meaningfully to
efforts aimed at crime prevention and peacekeeping. President Mahama also
addressed the ongoing unrest in Bawku, describing a recent market incident that
led to loss of lives and destruction of property as a tragic reminder of the
region’s instability.
To address the crisis, Mahama revealed that the Otumfour-led mediation process has been activated and welcomed stakeholders to Kumasi for dialogue toward lasting peace. He stressed that no one benefits from the continuation of conflict and urged cooperation from all sides to bring calm to the area.
The President concluded his address by calling for unity and vigilance in
the face of national challenges, appealing to Ghanaians to trust and assist the
military and police in maintaining order and safeguarding the country’s future.
