The Upper East Regional Minister, Akambugri Donatus Atanga, has shed light
on the recent incident where residents of Bawku expressed disapproval during
the visit of the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
According to the Minister, the crowd's reaction was not directed at the IGP's
appeal for peace but rather stemmed from dissatisfaction with the approach taken
by the security leadership in addressing the ongoing conflict in the region.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, Mr Atanga explained that the youth
were expecting firm solutions to the longstanding violence, not job offers tied
to conditions. The IGP had proposed a special police recruitment initiative for
Bawku youth as an incentive to lay down their arms, but this suggestion did not
align with the community’s priorities. Many residents found the proposal
underwhelming, given the gravity of the insecurity they face daily.
The Regional Minister clarified that the people had gathered to seek
assurance of a long-term resolution to the conflict, not temporary incentives.
He said their reaction reflected growing disappointment over how security
operations have been managed in Bawku, which has been a hotspot for violence
and unrest over the years.
The issue highlights a disconnect between national interventions and local
expectations. Many young people in Bawku have consistently called for improved
security and development initiatives that go beyond employment promises. Their
demand is clear: sustainable peace, fair treatment, and a return to normalcy
that allows the community to thrive without fear.
Tensions in Bawku have escalated in recent times, and despite several
interventions, the situation remains fragile. Mr Atanga’s comments point to the
need for more inclusive and consultative approaches that reflect the real needs
of the affected communities. He noted that while the IGP’s intentions might
have been positive, the timing and context of the job offer did not resonate
with the people’s desires.
With the situation in Bawku drawing national attention, leaders and
policymakers are being urged to work more closely with local stakeholders to
design interventions that foster trust and deliver real results. The people of
Bawku continue to hope for solutions that will end the violence and restore
lasting peace to their community.
