The Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, James Agalga,
has revealed that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has made commendable
progress in helping to resolve the ongoing Bawku conflict. According to him,
the respected traditional ruler has already initiated dialogue with both
parties involved in the dispute, setting the stage for a potential breakthrough
in the long-running crisis.
Mr Agalga shared this development during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile
programme on Saturday, April 12. He emphasized that Otumfuo’s involvement
should be seen as a major step forward and urged the people of Bawku to give
the peace process a chance to succeed. He stated that the monarch’s mediation
efforts are part of a broader initiative to promote reconciliation and restore
calm to the conflict-affected area.
“So I can reveal that Otumfuo has done some work on the Bawku crisis and has
met the two sides,” Agalga noted. “So I can only appeal to them to allow the
peace process to proceed.”
His remarks come at a time when tensions remain high in the Bawku
municipality, following a series of violent incidents that have drawn concern
from both local and national leaders. Various security and political
stakeholders have been working behind the scenes to restore peace, but efforts
have often been met with challenges.
Agalga’s call adds to a growing number of appeals from public figures
encouraging unity and cooperation in Bawku. The involvement of Otumfuo Osei
Tutu II, known for his role in peacebuilding across the country, is being
welcomed as a symbol of hope for lasting solutions. Stakeholders believe that
the monarch’s neutral stance and respected position can help bridge gaps
between the feuding factions.
The Bawku conflict, which has persisted for years, has affected social and
economic life in the region. Many residents have expressed their desire for
peace and stability. With renewed efforts by influential leaders such as
Otumfuo and the support of government institutions, there is cautious optimism
that a peaceful resolution is possible.
James Agalga's revelation is expected to inspire confidence in the peace
process and encourage the residents of Bawku to embrace dialogue over
confrontation, while giving room for sustained reconciliation.
