APC And Anti-Tinubu Coalition Battle For Buhari's Support

A high-stakes game of political chess is unfolding in Nigeria as the All Progressives Congress and governors elected under the party try to prevent former President Muhammadu Buhari and his loyalists from aligning with opposition figures. According to insiders at the APC National Secretariat, the party's National Working Committee and governors visited Buhari at his Kaduna residence to address growing concerns about his "body language" towards the current government.

The APC's efforts are driven by the party's acknowledgment that the North is uncomfortable with President Bola Tinubu's administration and may not support his second term. Buhari's influence in the North has been a significant strength for the APC, and losing his support could be detrimental to the party's chances in the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have been visiting Buhari, sparking speculation about a potential alliance. Atiku has announced plans to form a Coalition of Opposition Political Parties to oust President Tinubu in 2027, amid growing resentment against the president in the North.

Mohammed Lawal, a long-time political associate of Buhari, explains that the former president's support is crucial due to his significant influence in the North. "Buhari is still a big interest within the political circle in the North; how many former heads of state do we have that went through the political rigmarole to become president in the North?" Lawal asks.

Lawal notes that opposition figures are seeking Buhari's support because they recognize his electoral value. "Buhari is going to continue to be more relevant, especially as 2027 is going to be very tough politically for this country."

If Buhari decides to support the opposition coalition, it could have significant implications for the 2027 general elections. His loyalists, including former ministers and governors, may follow his lead, potentially shifting the balance of power in the North.

The APC's decision to visit Buhari and brief him on the party's progress since his exit from office is seen as an attempt to reaffirm their commitment to upholding his legacy. However, it remains to be seen whether this effort will be enough to win back Buhari's support.

As the battle for Buhari's support intensifies, one thing is clear: the outcome will have significant implications for Nigeria's political landscape in the years to come. Will Buhari's loyalty remain with the APC, or will he throw his weight behind the opposition coalition? Only time will tell.
