IGP Visits Victims of Bawku Police-Youth Clash, Calls for Calm
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has led a high-level police delegation to visit victims who sustained injuries during a recent violent clash between the police and some youth in Bawku, located in the Upper East Region. The visit was part of efforts to assess the prevailing security situation on the ground and foster improved relations between the police service and the local community.
During the visit, the IGP and his team interacted with victims of the clash, who expressed appreciation for the visit and used the opportunity to call for lasting and sustainable solutions to the long-standing conflict in the area. The victims urged authorities to work towards peace and stability to prevent further violence and casualties.
As part of their tour, the police team extended their assessment to the towns of Kusasa and Garu, where they evaluated the extent of damage caused to properties during the disturbance. They also visited the Police Training School at Nangode, where they held engagements with instructors, officers, and members of the surrounding community to better understand the challenges on the ground.
A key highlight of the visit was a courtesy call paid to the traditional ruler of Bawku, Zugraan Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II. The meeting with the overlord was aimed at strengthening ties between the police service and traditional leadership, and to explore collaborative ways to restore peace in the area.
Addressing community members and police personnel, the IGP expressed deep regret over the loss of life during the incident, specifically mourning the death of Fuseini Iddrisu, who tragically lost his life as a result of the clash. He described the incident as unfortunate and reiterated the need for harmony between the police and the local youth.
The IGP reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to ensuring peace and security in Bawku and other conflict-prone areas. He appealed to both the youth and police officers to exercise restraint and work together to maintain calm. Importantly, he emphasized the need for law enforcement officers to remain impartial and professional in the discharge of their duties, warning against actions that could further escalate tensions.
The visit concluded with a renewed pledge from the police leadership to deepen community engagement and support conflict resolution efforts in the region.
