Pedestrians Shun Tetegu Footbridge, Risk Lives Crossing Busy Highway

In Tetegu, a community in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, many pedestrians are endangering their lives by crossing the Accra-Kasoa highway on foot rather than using the newly built overhead footbridge. This behavior has raised concerns, especially considering the high-speed traffic on the highway, which forms part of the ECOWAS Express Network and is one of the busiest roads in the capital.

Previously, the road had a traffic light and regular police supervision to assist pedestrians in crossing safely. However, the presence of the traffic light led to significant delays and disrupted traffic flow. In response, authorities removed the light and constructed a footbridge to provide a safer alternative that would not affect vehicle movement.

Despite the government’s efforts and the clear safety advantages of using the bridge, some pedestrians continue to ignore it, crossing the road directly instead. This trend reflects a broader issue in Accra, where similar footbridges across the city are often neglected in favor of dangerous road crossings. Before the bridge at Tetegu was built, crossing the highway was a serious challenge due to the high speed of vehicles. Authorities hoped that the construction of the bridge would resolve this safety concern.

When Myjoyonline visited the site, a number of people were observed using the footbridge. However, many others were seen bypassing it, giving various reasons for their actions. Some drivers who use the route expressed frustration and disbelief, criticizing pedestrians who refuse to use the bridge. They argued that no reason could justify such risky behavior, especially when a safe crossing is available.

Joseph Danso, a commercial driver who operates on the Kasoa-Lapaz route, lamented the disregard for safety and traffic rules. He emphasized the danger pedestrians pose to themselves and motorists by refusing to use the footbridge.

On the other hand, some pedestrians cited personal challenges. Madam Amaley Okain, one of those crossing the road directly, explained that she has a knee problem, which makes it difficult for her to climb the footbridge.

A concerned resident called for stricter enforcement of the law, suggesting that pedestrians who flout the rules should be arrested and prosecuted. He argued that government investments in pedestrian infrastructure should be respected and used appropriately to prevent avoidable accidents and ensure public safety.
