Guru Shares Why He Wears Nose Mask and Hoodie to Lectures at University of Ghana
Ghanaian musician and current SRC President at the University of Ghana, Guru, has opened up about the struggles of being a celebrity student and leader on campus. In an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Andy Dosty, the artist revealed that his dual identity as a public figure and student makes his university experience uniquely challenging.
Guru admitted that balancing his celebrity status with academic responsibilities is not easy, especially in an environment like the University of Ghana where students prefer to keep their social life separate from academics. He stated that his visibility as a popular figure often makes it difficult to blend in, forcing him to take precautions to avoid attention.
He explained that he often wears a nose mask and hoodie when attending classes in order to remain unnoticed by his peers. “Every time I go to class, I wear my mask and hoodie so I don’t get recognised. Even then, people still notice me. Some even try to discreetly take photos,” he shared, describing how uncomfortable the situation can be.
Guru said the early days were particularly tough as students were constantly trying to confirm if it was really him in class. He recounted moments where he felt awkward walking into lectures and being the center of attention. Some students pretended not to recognize him, while others would whisper or sneak glances.
When asked about participating in class discussions, he explained that lecturers at the university don’t usually force students to answer questions. This made it easier for him to maintain a low profile for nearly three years without most people knowing he was even enrolled. “Even most lecturers didn’t know I was a student,” he said.
He added that he avoided building close relationships with Teaching Assistants (TAs) and chose to go through the academic journey independently. Despite the hurdles, he found his own ways to cope. Guru said he identified high-performing students — “nerds” — who he would consult for help whenever he faced academic difficulties. This strategy helped him stay on top of his studies and maintain a strong GPA.
Determined not to graduate with low grades, Guru remained committed to academic excellence behind the scenes. His experience highlights the pressures faced by public figures who return to school, especially in leadership roles, and the extra effort required to stay focused amidst constant attention.
Despite all odds, Guru has managed to strike a balance between stardom and scholarship, proving that with determination and discretion, success is achievable.
