Africa Must Speak with One Voice to Challenge Trump’s Tariffs – Former Egyptian Diplomat

The recent 10% tariff imposed by the United States on exports has raised significant concern within Africa’s economic and diplomatic circles. Former Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister, Dr. Mohamed Higazy, has called for a unified response from the continent to address what many view as an unjust trade move.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Emmanuel Dzivenu during the 60th Union of African Journalists training in Cairo, Dr. Higazy emphasized the need for Africa to unite and present a collective voice on the global stage. He stressed that the continent must work together, not as individual countries, but as a unified entity with a shared interest in its relationship with the United States.

“A collective voice must be heard. This is not just about one country opposing the United States, but about a continent that believes in itself,” said Dr. Higazy. He argued that a coordinated, continent-wide approach is necessary to secure the benefits that Africa deserves from its trade and diplomatic relationships.

The tariffs, which were introduced during the Trump administration and reinforced in 2025, are justified by the U.S. as a response to “unfair trade practices.” However, many African nations, particularly those benefiting from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), view the move as undermining long-standing trade partnerships and a setback for Africa’s position in global trade.

While Africa’s total GDP stands at approximately $2.8 trillion, far smaller than the U.S.’s $29 trillion, Dr. Higazy pointed out that the continent’s true strength lies in its unity. He believes that Africa must not simply react to global shocks but actively shape them through strategic cooperation and shared solutions.

Dr. Higazy advocated for appointing an African envoy to represent the continent’s interests, crafting a unified message, and ensuring that it reaches Washington. He also highlighted the importance of learning from successful development projects, such as Egypt’s new administrative capital, and using these successes to inspire broader regional collaboration.

In light of growing competition for influence in Africa, Dr. Higazy warned that the U.S. risks losing its strategic advantage if it fails to engage with the continent respectfully. He urged Africa to push for a strategic partnership, where its voices are heard, respected, and accommodated in global discussions.

The former diplomat emphasized that Africa’s path forward should be one of coordination, not confrontation, to create a collective, confident voice that can shape a more equitable future.
