In a strategic move to address the escalating plastic waste crisis in Ghana,
the government has disbursed financial support to selected Small and Medium
Enterprises (SMEs) involved in recycling and waste management. Each of the ten
chosen SMEs received $300,000 to bolster their efforts in promoting
environmental sustainability and advancing a circular economy.
This initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Environment, Science and
Technology, is aimed at strengthening the nation’s waste management systems
while creating employment opportunities through green ventures. The
government’s focus is to empower businesses that are committed to environmental
innovation and solutions for plastic pollution, which remains a growing concern
across the country.
Speaking at the grant distribution event, Minister Mohammed Murtala
emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in the use of the
funds. He made it clear that the grants are to be used solely for the purpose
of advancing recycling and waste reduction efforts. The Minister assured the
public of rigorous monitoring to ensure the funds are not misused.
“We should all be conscious and monitor how the monies will be utilised. I
do not need a dollar or a cedi from you. You need to use the money for the
intended purpose, and I will be doing the monitoring because this is just the
first tranche,” he stated firmly.
The support for these SMEs forms part of a broader strategy to tackle
Ghana’s waste management issues through innovation and collaboration. By
investing in grassroots and local-level enterprises, the government aims to
foster practical, community-based solutions that can scale up and contribute
meaningfully to national development goals.
Plastic waste has become a major environmental challenge in urbancentress,
clogging drainage systems and polluting water bodies. Efforts to reduce, reuse,
and recycle are increasingly being promoted by both the government and
environmental organizations. This financial backing represents a new chapter in
the nation’s fight against pollution and a significant opportunity for local
businesses to rise and lead in sustainable practices.
The selected SMEs are expected to begin implementation of their projects in
the coming months, with the ministry closely monitoring their progress and
ensuring value for money.
