The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Executive Committee of
Tema Central has called for calm and unity following protests related to the
appointment of a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Tema Metro. The
call comes after youth protests in Tema, demanding that President John Dramani
Mahama appoint an indigene as the next MCE.
Tensions have risen as reports suggest that Ebi Bright, the party’s 2024
parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, is being considered for the role.
This nomination has sparked concerns, especially after earlier indications
pointed to Patience Ankamah Addo as the preferred candidate. These developments
have led to unrest among some local residents, who argue that an indigene
should hold the position to ensure local interests are better represented.
In response to the growing unrest, the NDC Constituency Executive Committee
issued a statement on Sunday, April 13, 2025, urging all party members,
supporters, and residents of Tema to respect the constitutional process
involved in the appointment of the MCE. The committee emphasized that the
appointment is a constitutional mandate granted to the President and that it
is conducted through consultations in the best interest of the people. They
called for unity and urged all stakeholders to avoid actions, statements, or
demonstrations that could disrupt the peace and harmony of the city.
The committee expressed confidence in President Mahama’s ability to select a
competent and inclusive leader who would serve the people of Tema with
integrity and commitment to development. They also reaffirmed their dedication
to supporting any nominee chosen by the President, in the interest of peace and
progress in Tema Central.
The NDC constituency leaders appealed for a focus on collective progress
rather than individual interests. They urged all political actors and community
members to unite in the spirit of patriotism and mutual respect, prioritizing
the development and prosperity of Tema over divisive concerns. The message
stressed the importance of maintaining peace and unity, particularly at this
