President Tinubu Condemns Plateau Killings from France – But Nigerians Are Tired of Mere Statements

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is currently on vacation in France, has condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, which claimed several lives. Interestingly, Vice President Kashim Shettima is also out of the country, attending an event in Senegal.

So essentially, no one is running the affairs of this country. Both leaders have left us to the dogs. Not that their presence would make much difference anyway—except, perhaps, to widen the tax net and dish out more Agbado and cassava. But let's leave that aside and face the elephant in the room.

From France—sorry, Nigeria—President Tinubu released a statement via his aide Bayo Onanuga on X (formerly Twitter, but we move). In the statement, he called on Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State to investigate the killings. Because, of course, that's the magic wand we've all been waiting for. And just like that—poof!—the killings will stop. Right?

Here’s part of the statement:

"President Bola Tinubu expresses profound sorrow over the recent bloodshed in Plateau State, a tragedy that has claimed the lives of over 40 individuals."

"He strongly condemns the violence and extends his sympathies to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the state government, and the people of Plateau, while urging him to summon the necessary political will to resolve the crisis and establish enduring peace."

The statement also pleaded for peace and unity—as expected—reminding everyone to be brothers and sisters regardless of ethnicity or religion:

"I have instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate this crisis and identify those responsible for orchestrating these violent acts. We cannot allow this devastation and the tit-for-tat attacks to continue. Enough is enough."

"Beyond dealing with the criminal elements behind these incessant killings, the political leadership in Plateau State, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, must address the root causes of this age-long problem. These problems have been with us for more than two decades. We can no longer ignore the underlying issues. It is time to tackle them fairly and find a lasting solution. I have discussed these problems with the governor over time and offered suggestions for lasting peace."

"The Federal Government remains committed to supporting Governor Mutfwang and the Plateau State government in promoting dialogue, fostering social cohesion, and ensuring accountability—crucial steps towards permanently resolving the conflict in Plateau."

Well, I must say—I’m convinced. Releasing a statement all the way from France must be hard work, right? Sarcasm included.

Statement, statement, statement. Are we not tired? Plateau State has suffered repeated attacks for decades. People displaced. Families shattered. Communities destroyed. And all we get are condolences with a sprinkle of “we strongly condemn this.”

The Plateau killings are a loud, painful reminder that trust in our leaders has worn so thin, it’s practically invisible.

If they want to regain that trust, they need to act. They must not only stop the insecurity in Plateau State but work towards ending insecurity across the entire country.

Our leaders better do something—and gast do it fast.
