The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have initiated a series of well-coordinated and focused anti-galamsey operations across all three military commands as part of a renewed effort to combat illegal mining activities in protected areas. These operations, which are described as "surgical," are designed to minimize collateral damage while effectively addressing the growing menace of illegal mining in the country.
The operations are part of a broader national strategy to safeguard the environment and protect Ghana's water bodies from the harmful effects of galamsey. The military’s efforts are spread across the Northern, Central, and Southern Commands, ensuring that the crackdown on illegal mining is both widespread and simultaneous.
In the Northern Command, operations focused on Bole and the Black Volta Basin, areas that have seen a significant increase in illegal mining activities in recent months. The military’s primary objective was to dismantle mining camps, seize mining equipment, and reduce the environmental damage caused by these illegal operations. The efforts are aimed at curbing the pollution of vital water sources and restoring farmlands that have suffered from mining-related destruction.
The Central Command concentrated its operations in the Nkawie and Mankranso Forest Reserves, where illegal mining sites have been discovered. Troops in this area moved quickly to destroy makeshift shelters and seize heavy mining machinery, including excavators, in a bid to protect these ecologically important forest reserves from further damage. The intervention was widely welcomed by local authorities and environmental advocates who have long expressed concerns about the illegal mining activities threatening Ghana's natural resources.
Meanwhile, the Southern Command carried out similar operations in the Jerusalem enclave and the Subri Forest Reserve. In these areas, several excavators and mining equipment were seized, and illegal structures erected by miners were demolished. The GAF's actions have sent a strong message about the government's commitment to preserving Ghana's forest reserves and water bodies from illegal mining activities.
The military has reiterated its resolve to maintain the integrity of Ghana’s environment, calling on the public to support the ongoing fight against illegal mining. These operations reflect the country's dedication to protecting its natural resources and ensuring that illegal mining no longer threatens the nation’s ecosystems.
