Joseph Ayinga-Walter of JoySports has earned a prestigious spot among the top five young sports reporters globally in the ongoing AIPS Sport Media Awards. The young journalist, currently an undergraduate student at the University of Media, Arts and Communication in Accra, Ghana, was recognised for his compelling human-interest feature that brought the story of former Ghana Premier League player Eric Agyemang to the world’s attention.

Ayinga-Walter’s shortlisted work, titled “From Riches to Rags: The Story of Eric Agyemang, Former Ghana Premier League Star,” delves into the heart-wrenching fall of a once-celebrated footballer. Agyemang, who previously played for Berekum Chelsea, had slipped into obscurity, grappling with alcoholism and living in an unfinished building. The powerful storytelling not only highlighted the neglected lives of former athletes but also triggered a wave of support and reconnection for Agyemang. Following the story’s release, he was able to reunite with past colleagues and secure a stable job with Sapholda Ventures.

The AIPS Awards, now in its sixth edition, are regarded as the highest honour in global sports journalism. Ayinga-Walter’s piece stood out among over 1,890 entries submitted by sports journalists from 141 countries. In the Young Reporters category alone, more than 600 submissions were recorded this year. His feature advanced through several competitive stages and is now among the final five awaiting the ultimate decision on May 13, 2025, at a ceremony in Rabat, Morocco.

Ayinga-Walter’s achievement marks a significant milestone not only in his budding career but also in Ghana’s journalism landscape. His story’s selection in the top 35 percent of qualifying entries highlights the quality, impact, and journalistic integrity embedded in his work. The awards, since their launch in 2018, have recognised outstanding storytelling in multiple formats, including writing, video, photography, and audio, with participants spanning across 161 countries.

The young journalist’s rise is an inspiration for upcoming media professionals in Ghana and beyond, especially those exploring sports as a platform for impactful storytelling. His success story stands as proof that meaningful journalism can create change, offer hope, and build bridges between past glories and new beginnings.

With the global spotlight now on Ayinga-Walter, Ghana awaits with pride the final results of the AIPS Awards. His journey continues to inspire many young journalists striving to make their mark on the international stage.
