Nigerian music sensation Fireboy DML has sparked a wave of conversation across social media and sports circles after sharing his candid views on the current state of African football. In a recent appearance on the 90s Baby Show, the award-winning artist offered a surprising but honest take, declaring that Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, are currently ahead of Nigeria’s Super Eagles when it comes to overall team performance.
Fireboy, known for hits like “Obaa Sima” and “Peru,” acknowledged the immense talent pool Nigeria possesses, especially on an individual level. However, he argued that the strength of a team lies not just in individual brilliance but in cohesion and collective effort—something he believes Ghana is doing better at the moment.
“Right now, Ghana is a better team than Nigeria’s Super Eagles,” he stated. “Individually, we [Nigerians] are better. But as a team, Ghana is better.” According to Fireboy, Nigeria's football struggles stem largely from a lack of structure and teamwork. Despite having elite-level players competing in top European leagues, he feels the Super Eagles are yet to translate that individual prowess into a functioning, united squad.
One major issue he highlighted was Nigeria’s midfield, or lack thereof. Comparing both countries’ setups, Fireboy emphasized that Ghana’s midfield stands out, particularly due to the presence of Arsenal’s Thomas Partey. He stressed that Partey’s leadership and control in the middle of the park give Ghana an edge that Nigeria currently cannot match. “We don’t have a good midfield. Thomas Partey alone—we don’t have a midfield to battle that,” he said, using Partey’s recent UEFA Champions League performance against Real Madrid as a reference point.
Fireboy’s comments arrive at a time when football fans are gearing up for the Unity Cup—a friendly but fiercely anticipated clash between Nigeria and Ghana scheduled to take place in London next month. The game is expected to reignite the longstanding rivalry between the two West African football powerhouses, with national pride and bragging rights on the line.
