Ningo-Prampram MP and Minister of Communications, Sam Nartey George, has announced the reintroduction of the controversial anti-LGBTQ bill in Parliament, this time as a private member’s bill. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, he reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling a promise he made to his constituents and traditional leaders to defend what he described as Ghanaian family values.
According to Sam George, although President Mahama preferred the executive to reintroduce the bill, he felt a stronger obligation to the people who elected him. “I have absolute respect for President Mahama’s view,” he said, “but my first loyalty is to my constituents and my chiefs.” He emphasized that he made this pledge during his vetting, in the presence of his traditional leaders, and is staying true to it.
The bill was formally reintroduced just over four weeks ago, with support from several MPs. George noted that the government has the legal option to assume control of the bill during the process, but as of now, it remains under the private member’s route.
He acknowledged delays in the process, attributing them to the late formation of parliamentary committees. Unlike four years ago, when the bill was directly referred to the Constitutional Legal Affairs Committee, it is now being handled by a newly established committee focused on private members’ bills, which has contributed to a slower pace.
Despite the delay, George remains optimistic. He pointed out that the current version of the bill is identical to the one that was passed by the previous Parliament, which he believes should reduce the need for further debate. “We don’t need to reinvent the wheel,” he stated.
With a super majority in Parliament, he expects the bill to progress more swiftly this time. He expressed confidence that once Parliament reconvenes, the new leadership of the relevant committee will move the bill forward with urgency.
George concluded by reaffirming his dedication to the cause. “I have kept my promise to the Ghanaian people, my chiefs, and Parliament,” he declared. The MP emphasized that the reintroduction is not just a political move, but a fulfillment of his duty to protect cultural values he and his supporters hold dear.
