Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Rules Out 2028 Presidential Bid
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo and former running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has firmly stated that he will not be contesting in the 2028 presidential elections. His comments come at a time when the party is preparing for a critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Accra, where major decisions about the party’s future are expected to be addressed.
Addressing journalists during a party engagement, Napo dispelled growing rumors that he was planning to launch a campaign for the NPP’s presidential ticket in the next general election. “Me personally, I am not running in 2028,” he asserted, putting an end to the speculation.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh emphasized that his primary focus is on party unity and cohesion. He noted that in the wake of the NPP’s recent loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections, it is essential that all party members concentrate on rebuilding and uniting the party rather than pursuing individual ambitions.
The upcoming NEC meeting is anticipated to be a pivotal moment for the party, as key stakeholders gather to analyze the reasons behind the electoral defeat and plan the way forward. The agenda includes strategies to address internal divisions and enhance the party’s performance ahead of future elections. Prominent party figures such as former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia have already arrived at the venue—Alisa Hotel in Accra—to participate in the discussions.
This meeting comes at a crucial time, as the party grapples with internal challenges and calls from supporters for reform and stronger leadership. The 2024 elections exposed rifts within the NPP, with several party insiders and political commentators attributing the defeat partly to a lack of unity and controversial choices during the selection of candidates.
By publicly opting out of the 2028 race, Napo appears to be prioritizing party loyalty and stability over personal political advancement. His decision may ease internal tensions and help redirect focus toward restructuring and reconciliation efforts within the party.
As the NPP moves into a post-election rebuilding phase, the outcome of the NEC meeting is expected to shape the party’s strategy and direction in the coming years.
