A 28-year-old driver, Razak Sulley, has been remanded by an Adentan Circuit Court for allegedly attempting to escape from police custody at the Madina Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Sulley, who faces charges of escaping lawful custody, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his court appearance.

Sulley, who resides in Ashongman, Accra, was previously arrested for a fraudulent breach of trust case. On March 25, 2025, he was arraigned before the Adentan Circuit Court, where he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail amounting to GH¢80,000 with two sureties. However, he remained in police custody as his sureties had yet to finalise the bail process.

According to the prosecution, Sulley made an attempt to escape from custody on March 28, 2025, while seated at the CID office. He had requested to contact his sureties again to remind them to finalise his bail, but his actions soon escalated. Ignoring instructions from the investigating officer to return to his seat, Sulley made a run for it, sprinting downstairs and heading for the main entrance of the police station. Despite his efforts, police officers managed to catch up with him and apprehended him at the station's entrance before he could escape.

The prosecution revealed that Sulley later admitted his actions in his caution statement, acknowledging his attempt to flee from lawful custody. Sulley also explained that during his time in custody, he had not been provided with food and had approached the investigator, asking if the GHC35 he claimed was taken at the police counter could be used to buy food. He claimed that when he made the request, he was met with a hefty slap, which led to his frustrated escape attempt. Sulley expressed regret for his actions during the court proceedings.

The presiding judge, Mrs. Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa, remanded Sulley into lawful custody and directed the prosecution to file their disclosures. The case has been adjourned to May 21, 2025, for a Case Management Conference (CMC). The police officer who is the complainant in this case is stationed at the Madina Divisional CID, and the incident has sparked further interest in how custodial arrangements are managed and whether adequate provisions are made for detainees.
