A 38-year-old dispatch rider, Daniel Ayetey, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢16,000 with one surety by an Accra Circuit Court following allegations of defrauding a mechanic under false pretences. The court, presided over by Judge Isaac Addo, set May 14, 2025, as the date for the next hearing and instructed the prosecution to comply with disclosure rules ahead of the proceedings.
The incident, which dates back to February 2025, involved Bright Oduro, a mechanic residing in La, who was in search of a container to rent as a shop for his wife. Through the introduction of an agent identified as Leonard Dunyo, Oduro came into contact with Ayetey, who reportedly claimed ownership of a container available for rent.
Following discussions, the two parties agreed on a rental fee of GH¢16,000 to be paid as a two-year advance. Subsequently, Oduro paid GH¢11,000 to Ayetey and went ahead to purchase renovation materials amounting to GH¢8,000, preparing the container for use. However, events took a different turn when a woman who identified herself as Ayetey’s aunt stepped forward, asserting ownership of the container.
The woman reportedly asked the mechanic to halt all ongoing renovation works and presented documentation confirming her ownership of the said container. Alarmed by the sudden turn of events, Oduro reported the matter to the police, prompting an investigation which led to Ayetey’s arrest and subsequent arraignment before the court.
Police Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, who presented the facts of the case in court, indicated that the matter is under further scrutiny and investigations are ongoing. Ayetey, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretences, will remain on bail until his return to court next month.
This case has sparked discussions about fraudulent rental practices and the need for due diligence when engaging in property transactions. With real estate fraud becoming more prevalent in urban centres, many believe this case serves as a timely reminder for the public to verify property ownership thoroughly before making any form of financial commitment.
