France has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, reaffirming its stance as a key aspect of its foreign policy. This declaration was made following a high-level meeting between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs released a statement on April 15, 2025, underscoring the consistency of France’s position on this long-standing issue.

In the statement, France reiterated that the future of Western Sahara is firmly within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, a view that has been consistently supported by President Emmanuel Macron. The official stance dates back to a letter sent by Macron to King Mohammed VI in July 2024, in which he expressed his country’s steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity. France emphasised that it would continue to act in alignment with this position, both domestically and internationally.

During the meeting, Minister Barrot also reiterated France’s strong endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, describing it as the only viable framework for resolving the issue. He stressed that the plan provides the sole basis for a political solution, and that there is a growing international consensus supporting this initiative. France is committed to actively contributing to this momentum and ensuring that Morocco's proposal becomes the primary basis for future negotiations.

The French government also expressed its ongoing support for Morocco’s efforts to foster economic and social development in the southern provinces of the country. France highlighted the measures Morocco has taken to improve the living standards in the region and reiterated its willingness to collaborate further with Morocco in these areas. This includes bolstering economic development and ensuring long-term stability in the region.

France's consistent backing of Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara is a crucial element in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue. The French government remains committed to supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has affected the region for decades. With this renewed commitment, France strengthens its role as a key ally to Morocco in both regional and international affairs.
