Communication Minister Sam Nartey George has labelled the controversial SIM card registration exercise conducted under the previous administration as a "sham" and a "hoax," accusing it of misleading millions of Ghanaians and wasting significant financial resources. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, the Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament revealed that he has submitted evidence to the Attorney General’s office and plans to provide more as investigations into the matter progress.

According to Sam George, the SIM registration exercise was not a re-registration, as claimed by the previous government, but a complete failure in its execution. He emphasised that it was not a case of re-registering existing SIM cards but rather a flawed registration process from the start. He expressed his disappointment with the previous administration for misleading the public into believing they were properly registered when, in fact, the process had failed to meet necessary legal and security standards.

The Minister accused the previous leadership of undermining data protection and security protocols, which he deemed a grave violation of public trust and governance. “It was irresponsible public governance, to put it lightly,” he said, asserting that the public was misled into believing their SIM cards had been registered when, in reality, no such process was effectively carried out. He further criticised the waste of both public and private resources, estimating that mobile network operators (MNOs) likely spent over 25 million cedis on the initiative, while the government itself bore significant costs.

When asked why no one had been held accountable for the mishandling of the registration process, Sam George acknowledged that it was still early in the investigative stages but reassured the public that the wheels of justice were turning. He explained that the Attorney General’s office is responsible for ensuring accountability, and the evidence submitted would aid in this process.

Sam George also spoke about the moral responsibility that comes with holding public office, especially as the nation’s future is at stake. He emphasised that those responsible for the botched SIM registration process had shown a lack of respect for Ghanaians, accusing them of acting recklessly and irresponsibly during their tenure.

As investigations continue, Sam George remains committed to ensuring that those responsible for this failure are held accountable for their actions, citing the importance of integrity and transparency in public governance.
