The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has announced that he will resume his mediation efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing Bawku conflict. The announcement comes after President John Mahama gave his assurance that the peace process, led by the revered Asantehene, would continue as part of national efforts to restore peace in the troubled region. According to a statement released on April 15, the Asantehene confirmed that the mediation will take place from April 28 to May 1, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

The statement emphasized that the mediation process would involve all stakeholders, including the key leaders from the conflicting factions, as well as other relevant parties, all working toward achieving lasting peace in the Bawku area. The Palace further urged everyone involved to cooperate fully in the process, as it remains committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the decades-long tensions that have plagued the region.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s role in the peace process by former President Akufo-Addo last year. His involvement has been instrumental in previous attempts to bring harmony to the Bawku area, and this resumption of talks aims to address the recent resurgence of the conflict, which has led to the deaths of two police officers and severely impacted the delivery of healthcare in the area.

The Bawku conflict, which has its roots in ethnic tensions, has escalated in recent years, leading to violent clashes and a breakdown of law and order. The resurgence of the conflict in recent months has prompted calls for renewed mediation efforts. The upcoming mediation sessions are expected to be critical in addressing the underlying causes of the dispute and restoring peace to the area.

The involvement of the Asantehene in the mediation process is seen as a crucial step in bridging the gap between the conflicting factions and providing a neutral platform for dialogue. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is widely respected for his leadership and ability to mediate conflicts, and his efforts are seen as key in securing a peaceful future for Bawku and its residents.

With the mediation sessions set to begin at the end of April, all eyes will be on Kumasi as the Asantehene leads the charge for peace in Bawku, hoping to bring an end to the violence and instability that has plagued the region for far too long.
