Abubakari Adam Takoro has been unanimously endorsed by the Assembly Members of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly as the new Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE). Takoro’s nomination received overwhelming approval, with a 100% vote from the assembly members present, clearing the way for him to officially take office and begin executing his plans for the development of the city.
The confirmation process saw 58 assembly members participating, and before the voting took place, 17 government appointees were sworn in. Takoro’s endorsement marks a pivotal moment in the region’s political landscape as he now holds the mandate to lead and implement key government policies aimed at transforming Tamale.
In his acceptance speech, Takoro expressed his readiness to collaborate with traditional authorities to address the pressing challenges facing the Tamale Metropolis. “I’m aware of the challenges facing the Tamale Metropolis. In collaboration with our traditional authorities, we are going to tackle them,” he affirmed. His commitment to inclusivity and partnerships with local leaders underscores his vision for community-driven development.
The Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Saibu, also addressed the assembly, shedding light on his recent negotiations with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). Saibu revealed that he had successfully appealed to NEDCo to reschedule its revenue mobilisation exercise, initially planned for April, to give residents more time to settle their bills. He also warned against illegal electricity connections, emphasising that such actions would not be tolerated.
Iddrisu Hardi Pagazaa, one of the former candidates for the MCE position, called for unity and support from the youth in the region. Pagazaa urged young people to back Takoro in his efforts to bring progress to Tamale, stating, “He needs the support of the youth to succeed. I have already given him my support and shared with him my ideas, so I entreat all the youth to support him.”
This moment of unity within the Assembly highlights the confidence that Tamale’s leadership has placed in Takoro’s ability to steer the region toward greater development. With strong backing from both the assembly members and local leaders, Takoro is set to make significant strides in addressing the needs of the metropolis and ensuring its continued growth.
