Janet Asana Nabla, the Leader and Founder of the National People’s Party (PNP), has paid tribute to Dr. Edward Nasigrie Mahama, the former presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC), as he celebrates his 80th birthday on Tuesday, April 15. In a heartfelt press statement, Ms. Nabla recognised Dr. Mahama as a “distinguished statesman, a renowned gynaecologist, and a selfless patriot” whose life has been dedicated to the service of Ghana.
The PNP leader expressed that Dr. Mahama’s life is a powerful testament to sacrifice, service, and an unwavering love for the country. She said, “Today, the People’s National Party (PNP) joins the entire nation in celebrating a living legend.” Dr. Mahama's decision to leave a prosperous career in Chicago, where he earned $10,000 a month as a practising doctor, to return to Ghana was one of his most selfless acts. He accepted a position at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he earned only $200 monthly, driven by a deep compassion to serve his people and save lives.
Despite the pressures from family and colleagues who chose to return abroad, Dr. Mahama remained committed to Ghana’s development. Ms. Nabla explained that his decision to stay and contribute to the country was based on his belief that Ghana needed him more than anywhere else. As the flagbearer of the PNC in multiple general elections between 1996 and 2016, Dr. Mahama championed progressive social policies that continue to shape the country’s future.
Dr. Mahama played a key role in the development of the School Feeding Programme, driven by his belief that no child should have to learn on an empty stomach. He often pointed out that even in the United States, where he could afford to feed his children, the government provided school meals. He also contributed significantly to the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), advocating for the introduction of the NHIS levy and proposing sustainable funding models.
Ms. Nabla credited Dr. Mahama for laying the groundwork for policies that now serve as pillars in Ghana's national development framework. Although he did not ascend to the highest office, Dr. Mahama’s influence is deeply embedded in the country's healthcare and governance systems.
As the PNP celebrates his remarkable 80 years, Ms. Nabla conveyed her party's gratitude for his contributions to Ghana’s development. She extended warm wishes on behalf of the PNP and the nation, urging all Ghanaians to celebrate this living legend.
