The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has expressed deep concern over the growing wave of indiscipline in schools across the region. This concern follows a recent disturbing incident at the SDA Senior High School in Kumasi, where a student was shot in the eye by a fellow student. The Minister disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council has engaged school inspectors to investigate the situation thoroughly and identify actionable steps to address the growing concern.

Safety Protocols Under Scrutiny

One of the key areas under scrutiny is the safety protocols within schools. The rising trend of students bringing unapproved items, including weapons, to school is a major worry. Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the need for schools to review and strengthen their safety protocols to prevent such incidents. This includes ensuring that schools have effective measures in place to detect and prevent the introduction of unauthorized items.

School Transportation Challenges

The Minister also highlighted the challenges associated with school transportation. Several accidents involving school buses have resulted in injuries to students, underscoring the need for authorities to ensure that these vehicles are roadworthy and meet proper safety standards. Stakeholders have been tasked with ensuring that school buses are regularly inspected and maintained to prevent further harm.

Psychological Support and Healthcare

Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of providing psychological support and healthcare to students affected by traumatic incidents. In the case of the SDA SHS shooting, his health-focused foundation has stepped in to provide immediate medical assistance and psychological support to the victim and her family. The foundation is working closely with the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to ensure the best care is given to the injured student.

Creating a Safer Environment

The Minister noted the importance of continuous engagement with teachers and health professionals in schools to create a safer environment for students. Plans are underway to introduce additional preventive measures and reinforce discipline structures. This includes working with school administrators to develop strategies for promoting discipline and respect among students.

Accountability and Action

While investigations into the shooting incident are ongoing, Dr. Amoakohene assured the public that the law will take its full course, and appropriate actions will be taken to deter similar occurrences in the future. The Minister's commitment to addressing student indiscipline is echoed by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools, which has also highlighted the growing level of indiscipline among students as a pressing concern.

Key Measures

- Strengthening Safety Protocols: Schools will review and strengthen their safety protocols to prevent unauthorized items.

- Improving School Transportation: Authorities will ensure school buses are roadworthy and meet safety standards.

- Psychological Support: Students affected by traumatic incidents will receive psychological support and healthcare.

- Discipline Structures: Schools will reinforce discipline structures and promote respect among students.

- Accountability: Those responsible for incidents will face the full force of the law.

The Minister's efforts aim to create a safer and more disciplined environment for students in the Ashanti Region. By addressing the root causes of indiscipline and promoting a culture of respect and responsibility, schools can provide a supportive and nurturing environment for students to thrive.
