For the second time in four days, Newcastle put on an impressive performance at St. James' Park to win 5-0 over Crystal Palace on an unforgettable night. Eddie Howe’s side scored four first-half goals before Alexander Isak’s second-half strike made it 5-0, moving them above Nottingham Forest and into third place.
Newcastle are now in a great position to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, despite Howe's illness-related absence. Jacob Murphy struck his eighth Premier League goal of the season to put Newcastle ahead, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from an extremely difficult angle.
Dean Henderson was left helpless as Murphy latched onto Kieran Trippier’s pass before unleashing a thunderous strike.
At the end of the first half, the visitors inflicted even more misery on Palace by scoring twice in five minutes to lead 4-0 going into the break. After a brilliant counterattack that was started by Sandro Tonali, Barnes added to his weekend brace by putting the ball in the bottom corner. Fabian Schar scored the final goal of the first half by beating Henderson with an excellent free kick from Jacob Murphy, sending St. James’ Park into pure joy.
Isak joined the fun at the start of the second half, striking into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Joelinton stole the ball from Maxence Lacroix.
The Swedish player has now scored 21 goals in the Premier League this season; only Liverpool has won more league games than Howe's team has this season. After losing 5-2 to Manchester City on Saturday, Palace conceded five goals for the second game in a row. Oliver Glasner, manager of Palace, stated, "We’ve changed nothing, but things aren't working anymore." "We have to be very honest — we are Crystal Palace, and Newcastle and Manchester City are better than us if we don't perform at our highest level." Things might have been different had Eze converted the penalty — awarded after Pope missed the ball when attempting to punch clear and barged into Palace defender Chris Richards — when the score was 1-0.
Pope, on the other hand, did the right thing and flopped on Eze's weak spot kick. Guehi said of Eze, "When he scores, no one says anything." "It occurs. We just have to move on.”
