Trailing 2-1 from the quarter-final first leg, Harry Kane dragged Bayern level in the tie with an exquisite strike into the far corner to send the away end into raptures at the San Siro.
However, Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard scored in a matter of minutes to restore Inter's lead, and after Eric Dier's header in the 76th minute, Inter held on to secure their passage. In tonight’s other quarter-final, Arsenal humbled Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, beating the holders 5-1 on aggregate, to set up a semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain.
There were increasing signs of frustration from Bayern after Inter’s spirited second-half fightback in Milan and Stanisic was perhaps fortunate not to have been shown at least a yellow card for shoving a ballboy.
The youngster was violently pushed off the back of the seat on which he was perched by the touchline because the Croatian right-back believed that the ballboy was wasting time to give Inter an unfair advantage. Many TV viewers felt Stanisic should have been given his marching orders by referee Slavko Vincic, but the 25-year-old went unpunished and remained on the field to see out the entire 90 minutes.
We wanted everything to start the way we wanted it to, but there were two moments where Inter's qualities needed to be recognized. But we should have done better,’ the Belgian added.
‘We had many goalscoring opportunities, more than Inter.
‘I have mixed feelings. The harsh reality is that we will not play the Champions League final at home.’
Inter failed to properly clear a cross and the ball came out to Leon Goretzka, who fed Kane and the England forward steadied himself before firing past Federico Dimarco and into the far bottom corner.
But Inter equalized just seven minutes later. Lautaro — Inter’s all-time leading scorer in the competition — miscontrolled a corner but was quickest to react and managed to bundle it into the bottom left corner.
In front of the Inter fans, the winner of the Argentina World Cup jumped onto the billboards and extended his arms. When Pavard headed into another corner three minutes later, there were even more enthusiastic celebrations. The Inter fans were in for a nervy final 14 minutes, however, as Serge Gnabry’s cross found Dier at the byline, and his header strangely looped into the far top corner from the tightest of angles.
