Health Minister Warns Training Institution Heads Against Intimidation
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has cautioned heads of health training institutions against using intimidation or undue pressure in attempts to influence decisions within the Ministry. He issued the warning during a stakeholder engagement meeting held with the Conference of Heads of Health Training Institutions (COHHETI) on April 16, 2025.
Minister Akandoh emphasized the need for respectful dialogue, transparency, and professionalism in resolving challenges within the health education sector. He reiterated that the Ministry remains accessible for constructive conversations, but made it clear that resorting to aggressive tactics or creating public disturbances would not yield favorable results.
He stated that officials are always willing to engage with stakeholders in private, stressing that early communication prevents issues from escalating. “If you have concerns, come to the Ministry. Don’t cause a problem and then seek an audience. If you speak with us privately, it stays between us—it doesn’t need to become a public matter,” he noted.
The Minister also raised concerns over what he described as a growing trend where some heads of institutions bypass official communication channels and instead incite students to protest decisions taken by the Ministry. He warned that such acts would not be tolerated and would be seen as an attempt to pressure or intimidate leadership.
He added, “Some of you refuse to be patient or follow up through proper procedures when decisions don’t go your way. You stir up students to demonstrate. That won’t work—I will not be intimidated by such actions.”
Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed his dedication to operating a transparent and collaborative Ministry but stressed that any efforts to erode its authority would be met with firm resistance. He called on COHHETI members to approach issues through dialogue and established administrative procedures rather than confrontation or public outcry.
The Minister concluded by urging all stakeholders in the health training sector to act responsibly and maintain a professional approach in their engagements with the Ministry. His message underscored the importance of cooperation and mutual respect in resolving institutional challenges and maintaining harmony in the sector.
Through his firm stance, Akandoh made it clear that while he is open to dialogue, he expects heads of institutions to seek solutions through appropriate and respectful means, not by creating unnecessary public tension or using students as leverage.
