US Strikes Hit Yemen's Ras Issa Fuel Port, Killing 20 And Wounding 50

The United States military has launched a series of airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, targeting the Ras Issa fuel port on the Red Sea. According to the US Central Command, the objective of the strikes was to degrade the economic source of power of the Houthis, who have been attacking civilian shipping and military vessels in the region.

The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have been involved in a civil war in Yemen for over a decade. Since October 2023, they have increased their attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. These attacks have disrupted global trade, forcing many shipping companies to reroute vessels around southern Africa.

The US military stated that the strikes aimed to eliminate the source of fuel for the Houthi terrorists and deprive them of illegal revenue that has funded their efforts to terrorize the region. The airstrikes resulted in significant damage to the port and surrounding areas, with reports of a massive fireball and thick columns of smoke.

According to the Houthi health ministry spokesman, Anees Alasbahi, the preliminary death toll stands at 20, including five paramedics. There are also reports of 50 wounded workers and employees at the Ras Issa oil port. The death toll is likely to rise as body parts are still being identified.

The United States has been conducting strikes against the Houthis since March 15, 2025, in a bid to end their attacks on civilian shipping and military vessels. The US State Department has also accused a Chinese satellite firm of directly supporting Iran-backed Houthi terrorist attacks on US interests.

The Houthi attacks have hampered shipping through the Suez Canal, a vital route that normally carries about 12% of world shipping traffic. This has forced many companies into a costly detour around the tip of southern Africa, disrupting global trade and impacting the economy.

Israel's army has also been on high alert, intercepting an incoming missile from Yemen. The Israeli military has deployed aerial defense systems to intercept threats from the Houthis.

The US strikes on the Ras Issa fuel port are part of a larger effort to disrupt the Houthi's capabilities and restore stability to the region. The situation remains volatile, with ongoing airstrikes and retaliatory attacks expected. The international community will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds and what implications it may have for global trade and regional security.
