Meet Rebecca Young, a 12-year-old student from Kelvinside Academy in Glasgow, who has amazed the world with her solar-powered heated blanket designed to help people experiencing homelessness.
Rebecca’s invention isn’t just clever — it’s life-changing. Moved by the sight of individuals sleeping on the cold streets of Glasgow, she began thinking of ways to help. Her solution? A portable heated blanket powered by solar energy, cleverly built into a backpack. This not only keeps users warm but also provides them with additional storage, all without needing an external power supply.
Her innovation won national attention, earning her the MacRobert Commendation Medal in the UK-wide Primary Engineer competition, beating out more than 70,000 other entries. Her design was so impactful that it was brought to life by the engineering company Thales, who developed a working prototype of the backpack-blanket hybrid.
Rebecca explained her motivation with heartfelt sincerity:
