A leaked excerpt from the Prof. Mike Oquaye Report — commissioned by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to investigate its crushing defeat in the 2024 General Elections — has unveiled startling revelations about perceived extravagance within President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration. Central to this controversy is what has now been dubbed the “Chair of Mystery.”

According to the report, President Akufo-Addo’s personal presidential chair — upholstered in imported golden Italian leather — was transported around the country in a dedicated Toyota V8 Land Cruiser. Remarkably, the chair often arrived at events before the president himself, accompanied by its own security detail. It featured prominently at various gatherings, from national summits to local community durbars.

“Ghanaians watched in disbelief as the Chair received better transport than rural students trekking to school,” the report stated. In a time marked by economic austerity, debt restructuring, and painful financial “haircuts” that affected thousands of pensioners, the luxurious chair became a symbol of government excess. Findings on page 66 highlight how this display of privilege angered many citizens.

A presidential staffer quoted in the report recalled a moment of public outrage: “One frustrated citizen in Kumbungu was overheard saying, ‘We don’t even have chairs in our schools, yet his chair gets a luxurious V8 ride!’”

Presented to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) last week, the report paints a damning picture of an administration increasingly viewed as tone-deaf and detached from the struggles of ordinary Ghanaians. While the NEC has refused to release the full report, leaked portions have begun circulating widely, igniting heated discussions across social media and political platforms.

One of the report’s most scathing observations notes: “The chair’s motorcade appearance annoyed Ghanaians to look for their Voter’s ID cards, a whole one year ahead of the 2024 Elections.”

The Oquaye Report is expected to become a flashpoint in internal party deliberations as the NPP seeks to regroup and reposition itself for future elections. However, critics warn that without full transparency, the party may continue to grapple with issues of credibility and public trust.

Today, the “Chair of Mystery” stands as a potent metaphor for the growing disconnect between leadership and the people — a padded emblem of privilege in a season of national hardship.
