In the early hours of Friday, 18th April 2025, a critical breakthrough was recorded in Ghana’s fight against transnational crime as the Volta Regional Police intercepted a massive consignment of ammunition on a bus travelling from Accra towards Benin. The operation, which unfolded at around 3:30 a.m. at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa barrier, showcased the vigilance and dedication of officers working to maintain peace and order across the country and its borders.
A Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q was stopped for a routine check. What initially appeared to be a standard inspection turned into a major security operation after officers uncovered a substantial cache of hidden ammunition. The discovery included 60 cartons of AAA cartridges, amounting to 15,000 rounds, and 72 cartons of BB cartridges, totalling 18,000 rounds. These were carefully concealed in sacks and stashed under passenger luggage in a deliberate attempt to avoid detection.
The driver of the vehicle, Abasou Fousseni, aged 45, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, aged 38, were both taken into custody for further interrogation. Initially, both men denied any knowledge of the hidden ammunition. However, preliminary investigations revealed through police intelligence that the co-driver had reportedly loaded the consignment into the vehicle, raising serious concerns over the intent and destination of the cargo.
Given the circumstances, the driver was granted police enquiry bail to continue the journey with the stranded passengers, ensuring their safety and timely arrival. Meanwhile, the co-driver remains in custody and is assisting the police with ongoing investigations. He is expected to face court proceedings on Tuesday, 22nd April 2025, as authorities work to unravel the full extent of the case.
A press release signed by DSP Felix Danku of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Volta Region emphasised the commitment of the Service to ensuring regional peace and curbing cross-border crime. The swift action taken at the barrier was hailed as a testament to the increasing effectiveness of patrol and surveillance operations, especially in areas prone to trafficking activities.
The incident has triggered widespread public interest, with many commending the vigilance of the officers involved. It also highlights the importance of continuous security checks and inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding the borders and communities of Ghana. Such proactive interventions are critical, especially in a sub-region that continues to face challenges linked to illicit trade and arms movement.
The swift interception and calm handling of passengers reflect a balance of law enforcement and public safety. While questions remain over the origin and intended use of the ammunition, the case has brought fresh attention to the need for stronger transport monitoring systems and deeper intelligence-sharing across the region. The Volta Regional Police Service continues to lead investigations, with the hope of uncovering the network behind the consignment and ensuring that justice takes its full course.
