On Sunday, 20th April 2025, the youth of Sabon Zongo in Accra took a bold step in their ongoing fight against the rising drug abuse problem in their community. They launched an operation that led to the closure of over 20 shops suspected of trafficking illegal substances, including weed, cocaine, and Tramadol. This crackdown is part of a broader effort by the youth to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly among young people, teenagers, and even children in the area.

The operation targeted shops and drug dens that were believed to be selling these illicit substances, which have increasingly become a significant concern for local residents and authorities alike. The youth, with the permission of local authorities and the Chief Imam, carried out the raid in the afternoon. Their actions have sparked both praise and concern, as they represent a proactive approach to combat a crisis that many believe has been ignored for too long.

Speaking to Citi News, Mohammed Hashiru, the Deputy Spokesperson for Drugs in the Zongo Movement, made it clear that this operation is just the beginning. He assured the public that similar actions would be carried out periodically to rid the community of drug dealers. His words reflected the urgency and determination behind the initiative: “We have scattered all the blockers, and we will come back again. Now, we do not have any police here, but we have conquered them because we are the majority. Next time, when we come back with the reinforcement, if we catch anyone misbehaving, the person will be handed over to the police, and the next step will be to take him to court for prosecution,” he stated.

The success of this operation has been met with a sense of pride within the community, as many young people are stepping up to fight drug abuse and its devastating effects. The youth are sending a strong message that they are taking responsibility for their environment and are committed to making their neighbourhood safer for everyone, especially the younger generation.

Despite the success, the operation raises some critical questions regarding the role of law enforcement in these types of community-driven initiatives. While the youth were acting with good intentions, the lack of direct police presence during the operation may lead to future challenges, particularly in terms of ensuring that justice is carried out fairly. Nonetheless, the collective effort to reduce drug abuse is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, as it shows a united front against illegal substances that have plagued many communities across the nation.

This action by the youth of Sabon Zongo underscores the need for more robust community engagement and proactive efforts to address the drug abuse problem in Ghana. It also highlights the importance of collaboration between local authorities, community leaders, and residents in creating safer environments for the younger generation.
