DHL SUSPENDS GLOBAL SHIPMENTS OVER $800 TO US CONSUMERS DUE TO NEW CUSTOMS RULES

DHL Express, a key division of Germany’s Deutsche Post, has announced a temporary suspension of all business-to-consumer shipments valued over $800 to the United States, effective from April 21, 2025. This significant decision comes as a result of recent changes in US customs regulations, which now require more comprehensive formal entry processing for shipments exceeding $800 in value. Before these changes, the threshold for such formal processing had been set at $2,500.

The new customs rules, which came into effect on April 5, have caused delays in the clearance process for many international shipments. DHL, which typically handles a wide range of packages from various global destinations, made it clear that the suspension would only apply to consumer shipments and would not affect business-to-business deliveries, though the latter may experience some delays as well.

The decision has been met with concern from consumers and businesses alike, as it impacts a significant portion of international trade between global suppliers and US consumers. However, DHL reassured customers that shipments valued below $800, whether for business or personal purposes, will continue to be processed without disruption. These shipments will not be impacted by the new customs requirements.

According to DHL, the move is a temporary measure as the company seeks to adapt to the new regulations. In their statement, DHL expressed their commitment to working closely with customers to help them navigate the changing landscape and understand the adjustments that are set to take effect in May. Recently, Hong Kong Post made headlines after it suspended mail services for goods being shipped by sea to the United States, accusing the US government of "bullying" after Washington decided to cancel tariff-free trade provisions for shipments originating from China and Hong Kong. 

The new rules are part of the ongoing adjustments by US authorities aimed at improving the security and efficiency of international trade. However, these changes have created unforeseen challenges for companies like DHL, which must now comply with a more rigorous set of customs requirements, impacting both business operations and consumer expectations.

The logistics giant has emphasised that it will continue to process shipments from Hong Kong to the US by the new customs rules and will provide further guidance as additional changes are implemented in the coming months.
