In the quiet hours when the world was just stirring, it was struck with a heavy blow, the passing of Pope Francis. News of his death rippled across continents, stirring grief and reflection. And among the many voices rising to honour the departed pontiff, one came from Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama, who offered words laced with reverence, memory, and age-old wisdom.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Mahama called Pope Francis a “global symbol of compassion, humility, and justice.” These aren’t just lofty sentiments; they are truths carved into the legacy of a man who walked humbly yet carried the weight of the world’s downtrodden on his shoulders. The former president’s words echoed the timeless saying: “A good name is better than riches.”

Mahama’s tribute wasn't just political courtesy; it felt deeply personal. He spoke of the Pope’s unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalised, a trait that earned the late pontiff universal respect. “His legacy... will continue to inspire generations,” he said. And indeed, “The good that men do lives after them.” Pope Francis, through his tireless advocacy for justice and mercy, leaves behind more than memories; he leaves a moral compass for generations to come.

On behalf of his family and the people of Ghana, Mahama extended his condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful. His message was both diplomatic and sincere, acknowledging the global weight of the Pope’s loss. As the proverb goes, “When a great tree falls, the earth trembles.”

But perhaps most touching was Mahama’s recollection of meeting the Pope alongside his wife, Lordina. That encounter, he said, left a lasting impression, one that speaks to the magnetic humility and presence of the late pontiff. Sometimes, it’s not grand speeches but quiet moments that leave the deepest marks. As the saying reminds us, “What is remembered lives.”

In mourning Pope Francis, John Mahama captured what many around the world are feeling—a sense that we’ve lost not just a religious leader, but a moral beacon in stormy times. And as we reflect on the Pope’s life, we are reminded: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Rest in peace, Papa Francesco. Your light endures.
