Pope Francis has canceled all scheduled audiences for Monday, citing a mild case of the flu, according to a statement released by the Vatican. The move was described as a “precautionary measure” ahead of his upcoming diplomatic visit to Luxembourg and Belgium, planned for the end of the month.

Despite the cancellation of indoor meetings, the 87-year-old pontiff still made a public appearance on Sunday at the window of his Apostolic Palace to lead the traditional Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square. Addressing thousands of faithful and pilgrims gathered below, Pope Francis appeared to be in good spirits, although his voice sounded slightly strained. His appearance served to reassure Catholics around the world about his condition.

This isn’t the first time in recent months that the Pope has had to scale back his activities due to health concerns. Over the past few years, he has been hospitalized for respiratory infections and has undergone abdominal surgery. He also frequently uses a wheelchair or walking stick due to mobility issues. However, the Vatican has consistently stressed that Pope Francis remains mentally sharp and fully capable of leading the Church.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni emphasized that the decision to cancel meetings was based on “medical advice to rest” and not on any serious illness. “His Holiness is simply under the weather with a mild flu. There is no cause for alarm,” Bruni said during a press briefing.

The Pope’s next major appearance is expected during his Apostolic journey to Luxembourg and Belgium from April 26–29. Officials are confident he will recover in time for the visit, which includes public Masses, meetings with heads of state, and interfaith dialogues.

In the meantime, Vatican officials have confirmed that the Holy Father is continuing to work privately from his residence and is receiving routine medical care. Messages of support and prayers have been pouring in from Catholic communities around the globe, with many expressing admiration for his resilience and dedication.

Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Global South, has become known for his reform-minded leadership, humility, and tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized. Even at 87, he continues to be one of the most active popes in recent history.
