In a significant move to boost food security and reduce unemployment, the government of Ghana has announced the deployment of 5,000 agricultural graduates across the country under the Feed Ghana Programme. The initiative aims to modernize agriculture, increase food production, and empower young professionals in the sector.

The Feed Ghana Programme is a key component of the government’s broader Planting for Food and Jobs Phase II. It focuses on enhancing productivity by combining modern agricultural practices with local expertise. The newly deployed graduates—who hold degrees and diplomas in agriculture and related fields—will work directly with farmers, offering technical support, improving extension services, and introducing sustainable farming techniques.

Speaking at the launch event in Accra, the Minister for Food and Agriculture emphasized the importance of youth involvement in the agricultural sector. “This programme is not just about creating jobs; it’s about building a new generation of agricultural leaders who will drive Ghana’s food systems into the future,” he said.

The selected graduates will be posted to various districts and farming zones, particularly in regions where food production needs strengthening. They will assist farmers with soil testing, crop management, pest control, and irrigation practices. The government has promised to provide tools, transportation support, and monthly stipends to make their deployment effective.

This initiative is also expected to address the long-standing problem of graduate unemployment in Ghana. With many young people struggling to find work after school, the Feed Ghana Programme offers a practical pathway to employment while contributing directly to national development.

Industry experts have praised the move, saying that bridging the gap between academic training and field practice is key to transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape. However, some stakeholders have called for long-term sustainability measures, including permanent employment contracts, regular training, and access to credit for graduates who may wish to start their own farms later on.

Farmers across the country have also welcomed the news. Many believe the presence of trained agric experts will help increase yields, reduce post-harvest losses, and ensure that farming is no longer viewed as a last resort but as a profitable and professional venture.

With implementation set to begin immediately, hopes are high that this bold step will contribute to both food self-sufficiency and youth empowerment.
