Over 10 Feared Dead, Others Injured in Accra-Kumasi Highway Accident
A deadly accident on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has left over 11 people feared dead and several others badly injured, sending shock down the nation and focusing the nation's attention on road safety issues in Ghana. The accident occurred during the early hours of April 22, 2025, near Amanase, close to Suhum in the Eastern Region.
The eyewitness report recounts a devastating crash between a green Sprinter bus traveling from Kumasi to Accra and a truck heading in the opposite direction. The bus allegedly attempted overtaking another car at a high speed, and in doing so, violently rammed into the truck head-on. The crash was brutal, crushing the front side of the bus and entombing many passengers inside.
The Ghana National Fire Service and the National Ambulance Service emergency teams reacted promptly at the scene. The rescuers worked under duress to extract the trapped victims from the wrecked vehicle. The bodies of the deceased were transported to the Suhum Government Hospital morgue, while the injured victims were transported to the same hospital for emergency treatment. Some of the wounded are reported to be in critical condition, raising fears that more might perish.
The preliminary investigations have pointed to reckless over-taking and over-speeding as the likely causes of the accident. The section of Accra-Kumasi Highway where the accident occurred is notorious for similar accidents. Despite constant warnings by authorities and safety experts, most motorists are still disobeying traffic rules, posing danger to many lives.
The accident has also prompted public outcry and demands for stronger enforcement of road traffic regulations. Citizens from all walks of Ghanain life have wept in outrage and anger, demanding accountability and decisive action to arrest the increasing road traffic fatalities.
This should not keep on happening. Individuals die because of negligence," a witness on the scene added. "We need cameras, patrols, and stricter punishments for these irresponsible drivers.".
Road safety organizations have emphasized the urgent need for more stringent driver training, regular vehicle checks, and improved highway surveillance systems. They also call for infrastructural improvement in the form of improved signage, designated overtaking lanes, and wider roads to avoid accidents on this busy road.
For others, the tragedy also serves to highlight the emotional toll that road accidents continue to take on families and communities across the country. Breadwinners, children, and loved ones are being lost to preventable accidents, fueling national anger and calling for more specific government action.
In response to the crash, local authorities have vowed to undertake a thorough investigation into the accident circumstances. They are also reviewing current measures for road safety and considering further action to enhance protection for passengers on the nation's roads.
While families mourn and survivors begin the long recovery process, the accident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road responsibility. It is an eye-opener not only to drivers but also to policymakers and enforcers to move at speed and with vigor.
The Accra-Kumasi Highway remains one of Ghana's busiest transport arteries, connecting urban hubs and ferrying thousands of daily commuters. But unless safety protocols are radically improved and enforced, it may become an all-too-familiar site of tragedy rather than progress.
Until investigations are finished, the nation waits anxiously for this tragic loss hopefully to bring about long-overdue reforms to make Ghana's roads safe for all citizens.
