As Manchester United weigh their attacking options for next season, two names dominate the conversation: Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha. With Rashford flourishing on loan at Aston Villa and Cunha emerging as a prime target, the club faces a critical decision—stick with a revitalized academy product or invest in a dynamic but unpredictable talent.

The Case for Cunha

United’s interest in Wolves’ Matheus Cunha is no secret. The Brazilian forward, capable of playing as a No. 10 or wide attacker, fits the profile of a player who can inject creativity into a stagnant attack. Under Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system, Cunha’s ability to carry the ball, link play, and take on defenders could address United’s glaring lack of incision.

However, securing his signature won’t be straightforward. With a £62.5 million release clause and Wolves under no pressure to sell, United may need to offload players first. Jadon Sancho, Antony, and even Rashford—all currently out on loan—could be sacrificed to fund the move.

Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, emphasized the urgency of reinforcing United’s attack:

"They’re desperate in that position. They’ve lost Sancho, Rashford, and Antony—three players who naturally take on defenders. Garnacho has shown promise, but the squad is lopsided. They need someone who can beat a man, drive through midfield, and support the wing-backs. Cunha fits that mold."

Rashford’s Resurgence: A Missed Opportunity?

Meanwhile, Rashford’s loan spell at Aston Villa has reignited his career. Four goals and six assists in 17 appearances—including a lively display against Manchester City—have raised questions over whether United prematurely discarded him. His pace and directness were on full display at the Etihad, where he tormented Ruben Dias and netted a first-half penalty.

Roy Keane, never one for hyperbole, was impressed:

"When there’s space behind, Rashford is as dangerous as any player. Defenders hate facing him when he’s running at them. He’s still got areas to improve, but with the right service, he’s unplayable."

Villa have yet to decide on a permanent deal, but Rashford’s future at Old Trafford appears bleak. Amorim’s system demands different qualities, and with the club prioritizing Cunha, a parting of ways seems inevitable.

The Risk Factor

Cunha’s talent is undeniable, but his temperament raises concerns. This season alone, he missed six games through suspension, including an altercation with Ipswich Town staff and a red-card clash with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

Neville, however, sees his fiery demeanor as an asset:

"I love a player with character. The best I played with—Rooney, Cantona, Tevez—had that edge. Yes, they sometimes crossed the line, but they gave you something special. If I were facing Cunha, I’d hate his fight and unpredictability."

The Verdict

United’s attack needs reinvention, and Cunha offers a high-reward—if high-risk—solution. Rashford’s resurgence complicates matters, but with Amorim seemingly unconvinced, a summer overhaul looks likely. Whether Cunha can justify his price tag and channel his aggression productively remains the big question.

One thing is certain: United can’t afford another misstep in the transfer market. The fans—and their top-four ambitions—depend on it.
