In a meaningful gesture aimed at building brighter futures, Absa Bank Ghana has empowered students in the Eastern Region town of Apirede with essential educational materials and practical financial literacy training. The bank, through its Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Corporate Real Estate Solutions, and Procurement departments, visited two local Junior High Schools—Apirede Methodist Basic and Apirede Presby Basic—to deliver this impactful initiative.Students were presented with mathematical sets, exercise books, and other learning tools, sparking smiles and appreciation from learners and educators alike. The donation is a part of Absa’s broader Citizenship and Colleague Volunteerism agenda, a programme focused on supporting academic advancement and nurturing financial awareness in under-resourced communities. The thoughtful act resonated deeply with both schools, whose leadership highlighted the long-term benefits it brings to their students.
Isaac Ofori Awuku, the headteacher of Apirede Methodist Basic, shared his excitement over the initiative, describing it as an eye-opener for students and an important introduction to money management. He emphasised that this foundational knowledge would benefit learners greatly, especially those who aspire to pursue subjects such as business management at the Senior High School level.
Echoing this sentiment, Emmanuel Ntsiful Opoku, the head of Apirede Presby Basic School, commended the bank for its foresight. He noted that the training perfectly aligns with the school’s social studies curriculum and would go a long way in helping pupils understand how to manage money wisely. He proposed that such engagements be made an annual affair to reach more students in the region.
The donation is only one aspect of Absa’s larger financial education campaign. Nana Essilfuah Tamakloe, Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Absa Bank Ghana, underscored the bank’s belief that true empowerment starts with access—access to quality education, opportunities, and the practical knowledge that fuels confidence in handling finances. She affirmed that through this initiative, Absa is investing in the mindsets of future leaders.
The event also forms part of the bank’s nationwide Money Matters programme, launched in May 2024 in collaboration with the Young Investors Network and the National Banking College. The programme has already reached more than 100,000 students across Ghana, equipping them with critical life skills such as budgeting, saving, responsible use of credit, and investing. Interactive sessions have made learning about finance engaging and memorable, turning complex concepts into digestible lessons for young minds.
Both Apirede Methodist and Presby Basic Schools expressed deep gratitude to Absa Bank for its dedication to enriching the learning experiences of Ghana’s youth. Emmanuel Opoku, reflecting on the bank’s gesture, described it as one of the most meaningful interventions the schools have ever received. The initiative not only provided physical learning tools but also ignited a spark of financial wisdom that will guide the students far beyond the classroom.
