Renowned journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has stirred political discussions with his recent remarks on the 2027 presidential race, claiming that the only viable southern candidate capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently uninterested in entering the race.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, Momodu expressed concern over the state of opposition politics in Nigeria and hinted at a lack of preparedness among southern politicians to mount a serious challenge in the next general election. “The only southern candidate that has the charisma, structure, and nationwide appeal to confront President Tinubu is simply not ready to stress himself,” he stated.
Though he did not mention any names, political analysts speculate that Momodu may have been referring to figures like former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi or Rivers State's former Governor Nyesom Wike — both of whom have gained national prominence in recent years.
Momodu, a former presidential aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warned that unless the opposition begins early preparations and rallies around a strong candidate, President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may have an easy path to re-election.
He further criticized the current state of political affairs, saying that most opposition leaders are “too divided, distracted, or disinterested,” making it difficult to build a credible alternative to the APC-led government.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and public dissatisfaction, many citizens are already looking toward the 2027 elections for change. However, Momodu’s comments suggest that the South, which many believe deserves another shot at the presidency for equity and balance, may lack a willing and ready contender.
His remarks have since sparked reactions across social media, with some agreeing that opposition politics in Nigeria is currently weak, while others believe that the political landscape could shift quickly once campaigns begin.
For now, the question remains: who is the mystery candidate Momodu believes can take on Tinubu? And more importantly, will they decide to step forward when the time comes?
