In a move aimed at easing financial transactions for Nigerian pilgrims, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has approved the payment of Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) in cash for those traveling to Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.
The announcement was made on Monday by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), following confirmation from the apex bank. According to the statement, the CBN has authorized the disbursement of BTA in United States dollars through selected commercial banks, which will handle the distribution to all registered pilgrims across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Each pilgrim is entitled to a BTA of $500, which will now be paid in cash rather than through electronic or prepaid card channels. This decision, NAHCON said, was taken after considering the peculiar challenges Nigerian pilgrims face in accessing funds while abroad, particularly in regions with limited electronic banking infrastructure.
Speaking on the development, NAHCON Chairman, Jalal Ahmad Arabi, commended the CBN for its swift approval and responsiveness to the commission’s request. “This move will help reduce the stress many pilgrims encounter when trying to withdraw money during the Hajj. Cash availability will enable them to focus on their spiritual journey with greater peace of mind,” he said.
The 2025 Hajj is expected to see thousands of Nigerian Muslims embark on the sacred pilgrimage, with preparations already in full swing across various state pilgrim welfare boards. The CBN’s approval of the cash BTA is considered a timely intervention, especially in light of the economic difficulties many pilgrims face due to fluctuating exchange rates and international banking limitations.
Meanwhile, NAHCON has urged all pilgrims to collect their BTA from designated banks only and to ensure proper documentation during the process. Security agencies have also been alerted to monitor the cash disbursement process to prevent abuse, fraud, or exploitation.
As the Hajj season approaches, the collaboration between financial institutions and religious agencies highlights a commitment to ensuring a smooth and dignified pilgrimage experience for all Nigerian participants.
