A former member of the House of Representatives has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon any hope of clinching the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections, saying it is time for younger leaders to take center stage in the party.

The ex-lawmaker, who spoke to journalists in Abuja under anonymity, said Atiku has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, but his repeated attempts at the presidency have yielded little results. According to him, the PDP must look beyond Atiku and reposition itself with fresh faces, new strategies, and youthful energy if it truly wants to return to power.

“Atiku has been a statesman and a strong force in the PDP, but Nigerians are clearly demanding a new kind of leadership,” the ex-rep stated. “The party risks losing relevance if it does not present a younger, more dynamic candidate in 2027. Atiku should step aside and support the emergence of new leaders.”

The comment comes amid growing internal debate within the PDP about its direction and strategy for 2027. While Atiku has not officially declared interest in contesting again, his recent political activities and public statements suggest he may not be ruling out another attempt.

The ex-rep also warned that recycling the same presidential candidates could alienate a significant portion of the electorate, especially the youth, who form the majority of Nigeria’s voting population.

He urged the PDP National Working Committee to begin a deliberate process of identifying and grooming younger aspirants with the vision and capacity to take the party forward.

Political analysts say the former vice president, who was the PDP’s flagbearer in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, may face increased resistance within the party if he decides to run again, as calls for generational change grow louder.

As 2027 approaches, the battle for the PDP ticket is expected to be fierce, with party stakeholders likely to weigh the option of loyalty and legacy against the pressing need for renewal and broader electoral appeal.

The PDP has yet to issue an official response to the statement, but sources within the party hint at ongoing consultations and internal reviews ahead of its next national convention.
