Barcelona fans are trending #TerStegenOut on Twitter. This comes after the goalkeeper conceded three goals in his most recent outing against Valencia, following a serious injury. While we must admit that social media may not directly influence club decisions, it can still play a significant role—not just in club matters, but in shaping player decisions as well.

Whether or not he has seen the trend against Ter Stegen, one of Barcelona’s captains, Ronald Araújo, has made a clear statement in an exclusive interview reported by Cadena SER, and also shared by sports journalist Fabrizio Romano: he is not leaving Barcelona. He made this statement during his time with the Uruguayan national team, as the La Liga season is already over.

“I’m Barça captain and I’m gonna stay at the club. I’m under contract until June 2031.”

Araújo signed a new contract in January 2025, keeping him at the club until 2031. However, life at Barcelona hasn’t exactly been a bed of roses.

First came the infamous red card he received when Barcelona was already trailing 4-1 to Real Madrid in an El Clásico match. This led to criticism of Araújo for acting irrationally, which left his team down to 10 men.

He also received a red card in a more crucial UEFA Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, which may have contributed to Barcelona’s loss. This led his then-teammate Ilkay Gündoğan to criticize him, noting that his red card "killed the game."

The most recent disappointment came in the UCL semifinals against Inter Milan, where he failed to mark properly, allowing Thuram and Acerbi to get the ball past him, with Acerbi eventually scoring.

This didn’t go down well with Barça fans, especially given that this season has been seen as a potential golden opportunity—a generational run. With their form and the already-eliminated big clubs, it could have been one of their best chances to win a sixth UCL title.

However, speaking to Cadena SER about the criticism, Araújo revealed he was handling it with maturity and calm. Addressing the backlash, he said:

 “I don’t listen to the criticalcism. I don’t care.”
