President John Dramani Mahama has provided an update on the health of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, reassuring Ghanaians that she is recovering well and in good spirits. Speaking at the official launch of a nationwide programme distributing sanitary pads to over two million girls on Thursday, April 24, President Mahama relayed a message from the Vice President, who was notably absent from the event.

The President conveyed that he had spoken to Professor Opoku-Agyemang the day before, and she had expressed her regret for missing the event, which she described as a programme close to her heart. Mahama passed along her greetings, stating that the Vice President was getting plenty of rest and was in a stable condition. He confirmed that she would soon return to her duties, eager to continue pursuing the government's "reset agenda."

Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s sudden illness in late March had raised concerns when she was hospitalised at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) following a brief episode of ill health. On March 30, the Office of the President issued a statement confirming that the Vice President was receiving treatment and was in a stable condition.

In that statement, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, further noted that medical experts had recommended that the Vice President seek treatment abroad as a precautionary measure to ensure a full recovery. Acting on this advice, Professor Opoku-Agyemang commenced a three-week medical leave starting on April 7, 2025, prioritising her health.

The update from President Mahama is sure to bring relief to Ghanaians, who have expressed concern about the well-being of the Vice President. Her absence from the public eye had sparked questions, but her swift recovery and positive update from the President will likely reassure the public about her health. The Vice President, who has long been a prominent figure in government initiatives, is expected to return to her duties soon, continuing to support the administration’s development agenda.
