José Mourinho is reportedly nearing a sensational move to take over as head coach of the Portuguese national football team, according to recent reports, including those from CNN. The legendary football manager, currently at Fenerbahçe, is being seriously considered by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) as they weigh their options for the next chapter of the Seleção’s future.

The role has been under scrutiny since the departure of former coach Fernando Santos, who led Portugal to Euro 2016 and Nations League success, but whose tenure ended on a less favorable note following a quarter-final exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Since then, the FPF has been evaluating candidates capable of leading a talented generation of players that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, João Félix, Diogo Jota, Bernardo Silva and more.

Mourinho, now 62, has long been linked with the Portugal job. While he has repeatedly turned down national team offers in the past — including from Portugal and even England — the timing now seems to align more closely with his interests. The former Real Madrid, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Manchester United boss has expressed a desire to coach at a major international tournament, and leading his home nation would offer that opportunity on a personal and professional level.

Although Mourinho is under contract with Fenerbahçe, sources close to the situation suggest that talks are progressing behind the scenes. It's unclear whether he would take on the Portugal job full-time or consider a dual role, as was rumored during his stint at AS Roma when he was briefly linked with the Portugal job as well.

Mourinho’s reputation precedes him — a two-time Champions League winner and one of the most decorated managers in football history, his tactical expertise, big-game mentality, and commanding presence could be exactly what Portugal needs to push for major silverware once again which will make them one of the greates one more time.

However, there are questions surrounding whether his pragmatic style would suit Portugal’s current flair-driven, attack-minded squad. That said, his ability to adapt and win in various leagues might be the key selling point for the FPF.

As of now, no official confirmation has been made by the federation or Mourinho himself. But if a deal is finalized, it would mark one of the most high-profile managerial appointments in international football — and potentially a transformative move for Portuguese football heading into Euro 2028 and the next 2026 World Cup cycle.
