The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a violent confrontation in Nyinahin that turned fatal on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The incident, which occurred around 11:00 a.m., left one person dead and three others wounded after an altercation between mourners and military personnel escalated into gunfire.
According to preliminary reports, the tragedy unfolded as a group of young locals proceeded to the cemetery along the Kumasi–Bibiani Highway to bury a deceased friend. During the procession, a military truck reportedly stopped after soldiers spotted one of the mourners wearing camouflage attire. Eyewitnesses claim the personnel attempted to forcibly remove the clothing, sparking a heated argument.
The situation quickly turned deadly when a soldier allegedly fired a shot at the mourner, later identified as Akwasi Lala, popularly known as Kushivi, striking him in the head. He died instantly. As tensions flared, additional shots were fired to disperse the crowd, leaving three others injured.
Police confirmed that the wounded are currently hospitalized and responding well to treatment. A specialized investigative team swiftly arrived at the scene, collecting ballistic evidence—including spent shell casings—for forensic examination. The deceased has been transported to the Nyinahin Community Mortuary for an autopsy.
DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, visited both the crime scene and the hospitalized victims, assuring residents of a transparent and exhaustive probe. "We are committed to ensuring justice prevails," he stated, emphasizing that anyone found culpable would be held accountable.
Authorities are coordinating with the Central Military Command to secure the cooperation of the soldiers involved. In the meantime, the police have appealed for calm, urging the public to avoid speculation and allow due process to take its course.
